Terms of Service
Last updated: 22 October 2026
On this page
These terms apply to the Plated app for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android, including its widgets, share extension and shortcuts (the "App"), made by Estopia Engineering Ltd, a company registered in Scotland (company number SC874827) ("we", "us", "our"). By using the App you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the App.
If you got the App from Apple's App Store, these terms are the end-user licence agreement for the App, in place of Apple's standard licence. The extra terms Apple requires are in App Store and Google Play.
How we handle your data is explained in the Plated Privacy Policy.
Recipe Accuracy and Allergens
Recipes you import are extracted automatically by AI and may be wrong. Ingredients, quantities, temperatures, timings and steps can be missed, misread or changed, and scaling a recipe can make errors larger.
- Allergies and dietary needs: always check the ingredients against the original recipe and the labels on the food you use. Never rely on Plated alone to tell you whether a recipe is safe for someone with an allergy or intolerance.
- Food safety: check that meat, fish, eggs and other foods are cooked thoroughly, whatever the recipe says.
- Timers: Cook mode timers and their alerts depend on your device, its notification settings and Focus modes. Keep an eye on your cooking rather than relying on an alert alone.
- Nutrition information, where shown, is an estimate and is not medical or dietary advice.
Compare imported recipes with the original source before you cook, especially when cooking for others.
Free Use and Plated Pro
You can use Plated for free and save up to 5 recipes. Plated Pro is an optional paid subscription that removes that limit and unlocks other features, such as scaling servings and Cook mode, as shown in the App when you subscribe. We may change which features are free or part of Pro, but we won't take away something you've already paid for during your current subscription period.
Subscriptions, Renewal and Refunds
- Billing: Plated Pro is bought through the App Store or Google Play and charged to your Apple Account or Google account when you confirm the purchase. The price and billing period are shown before you buy.
- Plans: Plated Pro is available monthly or yearly. Where the App Store offers it, you can also pay for the yearly plan in 12 monthly payments. If you choose that, you commit to the full 12 months: cancelling stops the plan renewing at the end of the year, but doesn't stop the remaining monthly payments for that year.
- Free trials: if a free trial is offered, you'll be charged when it ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before.
- Auto-renewal: your subscription renews automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Your account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- Cancelling: manage or cancel your subscription in your App Store or Google Play account settings, or from Settings in the App. Deleting the App or your Estopia account doesn't cancel it. When you cancel, Pro stays active until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Refunds: payments are handled by Apple or Google, so refunds are too, under their refund policies. We can't issue refunds ourselves. This doesn't affect your statutory rights.
- Pro on your other devices: if you're signed in to an Estopia account when you subscribe, or sign in afterwards, Pro works on every device where you sign in to that account, on iPhone, iPad and Android. A subscription can be linked to only one Estopia account. If you don't sign in, Pro works on devices using the same Apple Account or Google account.
- Restoring purchases: use Restore Purchases in the App, or sign in to the same Estopia account on another device.
Using Plated
You agree not to:
- use the App to break the law or anyone else's rights;
- try to overload, scrape, reverse engineer or get around limits or security checks in the App or our API, for example by sending automated imports or using a modified copy of the App;
- use the App to collect other people's content for republishing or commercial use.
Importing a recipe only works from the genuine App on a genuine device. We check this with Apple's App Attest and DeviceCheck and Google's Play Integrity, so imports may not work on modified or unofficial copies of the App, emulators or simulators, or some rooted or jailbroken devices.
We limit how many recipes you can import each day to keep the service working for everyone, and may lower the limit for a device that keeps going over it.
Recipes and Other People's Content
Recipes you import come from websites and videos that belong to their creators. Plated saves a copy for your own personal use and keeps a link to the source. Please respect creators' rights and don't republish their recipes without permission. Recipes in Discover are provided by Spoonacular and their original publishers.
We aren't responsible for third-party websites or videos, and a link that works today may stop working or change.
Estopia Accounts
You don't need an account to use Plated. If you sign in with an Estopia account, to use Pro on your other devices or to sync, you're responsible for keeping your sign-in details safe. You can delete your Estopia account at any time from Settings in the App. The same account works with our other apps.
Encrypted Sync
Sync is optional and end-to-end encrypted: your recipes and grocery list are encrypted on your devices with keys that only your devices hold. This means:
- Keep your recovery code safe. When you first turn on sync you're shown a recovery code. If you lose every device that has your keys and your recovery code too, your synced data can't be recovered, by you or by us. Copies already on your devices aren't affected.
- We can't restore synced data for you, read it or fix it, because we never have the keys.
- Deleting synced data and resetting your keys are permanent. Delete Synced Data removes Plated's synced copy for all your devices. Reset Encrypted Data removes the encrypted data of every Estopia app on your account.
Sync isn't a backup. Keep your device backed up if your recipes matter to you.
Intellectual Property
The App, its design and its code belong to Estopia Engineering Ltd and its licensors. We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the App on devices you own or control, under these terms and the App Store or Google Play terms.
App Store and Google Play
These terms are between you and us only, not Apple or Google. We, not Apple or Google, are solely responsible for the App and its content. If you got the App from Google Play, Google Play's terms also apply.
If you got the App from Apple's App Store, you and we also agree that:
- Licence: your licence to use the App is non-transferable and limited to Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the usage rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions. The App may also be used by other accounts linked to yours through Family Sharing or volume purchasing. Nothing in these terms overrides those usage rules.
- Support: we are solely responsible for any maintenance and support for the App, as set out in these terms or required by law. Apple has no obligation whatsoever to provide any maintenance or support for the App.
- Warranty: we are solely responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent they aren't effectively disclaimed. If the App fails to meet any warranty that applies, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price you paid for the App, if any. To the fullest extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the App, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses from a failure to meet a warranty are our responsibility.
- Product claims: we, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with any claims by you or anyone else about the App or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the App fails to meet any legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- Intellectual property: if anyone claims that the App or your possession or use of it infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
- Legal compliance: you confirm that you are not located in a country that is subject to a U.S. Government embargo or that the U.S. Government has designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Other terms: you must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the App, such as your mobile network's terms and the terms of the websites and video services you import recipes from.
- Third-party beneficiary: Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Once you accept them, Apple will have the right (and will be deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce these terms against you as a third-party beneficiary.
Questions, complaints or claims about the App go to us, not Apple: see Contact.
Ending These Terms
You can stop using Plated at any time by deleting the App (and, if you have one, your Estopia account). We may suspend or end your access if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms. We may also withdraw the App; if we do while you have an active subscription, we'll tell you in advance where we can.
Limitation of Liability
The App is provided "as is". We work to keep it accurate and available, but we don't promise it will be error-free or always online.
To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for loss that wasn't foreseeable, for business losses, for loss arising from relying on an imported recipe without checking it against the original source, or for synced data you can no longer decrypt because your keys and recovery code were lost. Our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid for Plated Pro in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't be limited by law, and nothing affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of Scotland, and the Scottish courts have jurisdiction over any dispute about them. If you live elsewhere in the UK or in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of where you live and may also bring a claim in your local courts.
Changes
We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top of this page, and if a change is significant we'll tell you in the App before it takes effect. If you keep using the App after that, the new terms apply.
